Abstract:

Uninstalling Argus 3015-215 driver Version 1.01 drivers requires fix for Smart Card Services to restore use of a smart card reader with the system. This would not be an issue until this package was uninstalled and the user would attempt to add new smart card reader drivers to the system.
Additionally, the Fortezza reader component is unaffected and will continue to function once an updated 3015 driver is loaded.

Problem:

After uninstalling the Argus 3015-215 driver package version 1.01 from the Control Panel - Add Remove Programs utility and installing a newer version of the driver the Windows smart card service will not start.

Cause:

Investigation into this issue indicated that a dword value in the registry to start the smart card services is deleted when this package is uninstalled.

This work around task is intended for SYSTEM or LOCAL ADMINISTRATORS ONLY. Incorrectly modifying the system registry can lead to system instability. We recommend you back up your system data and registry information before making any changes to the system registry.

The following changes must be made to the registry to correct this problem:

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SCardSvr.

Right click on the 'SCardSvr' Key and select New DWORD

Enter START as the name for the new key

Right click on this new key and select 'Modify' and enter 2 for the value.

Next you MUST reboot your system
